Native Instruments‘ gear is a must-have for those in the beat making world. We put the cheaper, dinkier Maschine Mikro through its paces and found that while we loved the portability, we weren’t so hot on the lack of MIDI ports and absence of knobs for twiddlin’. That said, we weren’t able to hate on the compromises that were made to bring it in under $ 600 and small enough to stow in a backpack, but how about you guys out there? When you’ve used this gear day in, day out, can you forgive its flaws in exchange for that extra cash in your hand, or do you wish you’d saved up a little more? If you were in NI’s position, what would you have done differently?

When such things do make an appearance, they tend to be acoustic docks made from materials like bamboo (think iBamboo) that simply boost the source audio in a similar way to using an old-fashioned horn speaker, or otherwise get their power from renewable resources (as with the SoliCharger or Rukus, for instance). The Pulpop MP3 speaker designed by Balance Wu and Chin Yang takes a slight diversion from such norms. It’s made from recycled paper pulp and uses of vibration speaker technology to amplify the source audio through the surface on which it stands and the hollow space inside the doughnut…

When 68-year-old Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger performed the song “Tea Party” with guitarist Jeff Beck on the Saturday Night Live season finale last night, apparently some NBC affiliates didn’t like it. Jagger told the audience that he wrote the number himself — which is about the current presidential candidates. He then broke out some profanity in the next line, causing several stations to cut away early to commercial.
